First ever fight broadcast by HBO was January 22, 1973 from Kingston, Jamaica. George Foreman stopped Joe Frazier in round 2 to win the Heavyweight World Championship.

I think Don Dunphy was the HBO broadcaster and called the fight by himself.

Howard Coselll also called this fight, but I'm fairly sure it was as a broadcaster for ABC. He uttered his famous line, "DOWN GOES FRAZIER! DOWN GOES FRAZIER!"

Larry Merchant joined HBO in 1978 and Barry Tompkins did in 1980, as did Sugar Ray Leonard. Merchant, Tompkins, and Leonard were the first regular HBO team from what I can tell.
