i think a College Sports team was called the cornhuskers. it is the only nickname derived from a sports team.
Because it is noted for the corn grown there.
The nickname "Cornhuskers" was first applied to Nebraska athletic teams at the turn of the century by sports writer Charles "Cy" Sherman of the Nebraska State Journal. Before adopting Sherman's suggestion, Nebraska sports teams were called "The Bugeaters," "Tree Planters," "Nebraskans," "Rattlesnake Boys," "Antelopes" and "Old Gold Knights." Of course, today it is commonly shortened as "Huskers."
They are called Nebraskans.
Corn was and continues to be the major agricultural product of the state, but the nickname seems to have derived from a sports rivalry with the state of Iowa. The nickname was first used for the University of Nebraska athletic teams - the "Cornhuskers" - which was coined in 1900 by Charles S. "Cy" Sherman, a sportswriter for the Nebraska State Journal in Lincoln. "Cornhuskers" replaced earlier nicknames, such as "Golden Knights", "Antelopes", and "Bugeaters". The term "cornhusker" comes from the method of harvesting or "husking" corn by hand, which was common in Nebraska before the invention of husking machinery.Despite Nebraska's nickname, they are not the largest producer of corn in the United States. That honor goes to the great state of Iowa.Because of the way corn was harvested. At http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/article/Community/NebraskaBecause corn is a major crop. People from Oklahoma are called Sooners because during 1889 before President Grover Cleveland officially opened Oklahoma for settlement, some people entered the land and occupied it. Oklahoma adopted the name the Sooner State because of this.
They went through several in a short period of time. What stuck the longest before Cornhuskers was Bug Eaters.
The first farmers to settle Oklahoma were often called "Sooners" because they entered the territory before it was officially open for settlement in the 1889 Land Run. They sneaked in early to stake their claim to the land, hence the nickname "Sooners."
