Terry Fox tried to run across Canada 1980 to raise awareness of cancer. He had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 1977 and had to have his leg amputated. He had to end his run near Thunder Bay because the cancer spread to his lungs. Overall, he completed 5,280 kilometers in 143 days. He died 9 months later.
There are two. 1. Terry Fox. He had cancer (osteosarcoma), got his leg cut off and got an artificial leg. He ran to raise money and help people who suffer from cancer. Terry Fox did not actually run all the way across Canada. He was forced to stop his epic quest at Thunder Bay, Ontario due to chest pains/breathing difficulties. It turned out that the cancer had spread into his respiratory system. He died within a year.
2. The man that actually ran the entire distance on one leg was Steve Fonyo who was inspired by Terry Fox's example and completed the journey a few years later.
Mark Kent of Ontario was the first person to run across Canada in 1974. He ran a total of 4017 miles from Victoria B.C. to St. John's Newfoundland in a 112 days of running.
Well, he used his amputated leg, but his brother (and probably other people too) followed Terry in a car. The fans also helped him run by cheering him on!
He was twenty years old when he started his run.
you can read or buy his biography in any bookstore or library. he is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes, to this day we have a Terry Fox day that raises millions for cancer research each and every year.
