In February 2017, the San Francisco 49ers selected Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their fourth head coach in four seasons. Shanahan is the son of Mike Shanahan, who was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers (1992-1994) before winning Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII as the head coach of the Denver Broncos.
Shanahan replaced Chip Kelly, who was fired as the 49ers head coach after a disappointing season in 2016.
Jim Tomsula, the Niners' former defensive line coach from 2007 to 2014, replaced Jim Harbaugh as head coach in January 2015. Harbaugh had left the 49ers at the end of the 2014 season to become head coach of his college alma mater, the University of Michigan.
Tomsula was fired after San Francisco posted a 5-and-11 record during the 2015 regular season.
