John Simpson aka John Simpson Kirkpatrick was a stretcher-bearer with the original ANZAC troops who landed at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.

Simpson took one (and later more) of the donkeys that had been landed with the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli and, instead of just using them as water-carriers, used the donkeys to carry wounded men through the treacherous Shrapnel Gully at Gallipoli to where they would be treated and evacuated from the beaches.

On the morning of 19 May 1915, following a night of vicious fighting after the arrival of Turkish reinforcements, he was killed by Turkish machine gun fire near Steele's Post as he was returning down Monash Valley with two wounded men. One man was shot with Simpson, but the man on the donkey's back remained.

The donkey continued on the well-worn track, obediently carrying the wounded man to where he would be tended. For this reason, Simpson is remembered as a hero.
