As of the end of the 2009 season, most people would say the best player on the 49ers is Inside linebacker Patrick Willis (No.52). Others worthy of consideration are Running back Frank Gore (No.21), Tight end Vernon Davis (No.85), Center Eric Heitman (No.66), Defensive end Justin Smith (No.94), Corner back Shantwae Spencer (No.36), Inside linebacker Takeo Spikes (No.51), and of course Punter Andy Lee (No.4)!
Wide Receiver Michael Crabtree (No.15) and Outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks (No.55) are up there too but both are still very young and have a long way to go before they can be mentioned with the above.
I hope this answered your question and helped others realize how much talent the 49ers really have.

Rings are given to players not teams.
Several players have worn number 58 for the 49ers, but the most famous would probably be linebacker Keena Turner, who played with the 49ers from 1980 through 1990 and was a member of four Super Bowl-winning teams.
The 49ers do not stink.
The two most famous players who have worn number 39 for the San Francisco 49ers were Hall-of-Fame running back Hugh McElhenny (1952-60) and Pro Bowl defensive back/kick returner Kermit Alexander (1963-69). The number was retired in 1971 by the 49ers franchise in McElhenny's honor following his 1970 Hall-of-Fame induction and in celebration of the 49ers' 25th anniversary.
