No. The Olympic Games have never been held on the African continent. South Africa is the only country in Africa with anything like the infrastructure and resources necessary to host the Games. South Africa hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup successfully, a milestone which came only a year after the transition to democracy. Cape Town failed in 1997 to win its bid for the 2004 Olympic Games. It is a sad fact that Africa is unlikely to host the Games for a long time. Competition to host the Games is always fierce and South Africa's major weaknesses are a high crime rate and lack of economic clout. Crime in particular has been touted by nations competing with South Africa as a reason not to hold the Games there.
