Dire. In the early part of the decade, at least, many matches were a procession of line-out, kick to touch, line-out, kick to touch, line-out, kick to touch... a tactic of creeping up the pitch one line-out at a time (often more than a hundred in a match). Scores were low, inevitably - the last 0-0 in a 5 (later 6) nations match coming in 1962.

Eventually, thankfully, the rules were changed to outlaw this tactic.
