It was hard, 80% of Americans worked on a farm. In 1800 American independence was only 25 years old. Travel was way different of course. It took 15 days to get from Charleston to Philadelphia. Everything harder and industrialization didn't really start to fire off until the 1900's so these people had to literally fight for survival.
