South Africa
If by south Africa you mean South Africa, it isn't. Rugby is actually the most popular sport, and by far the sport they have had the most success in, though I suppose that is one of the many sports that can be referred to as "football". If by south Africa you mean southern Africa, I'm not aware of it being any more popular in southern Africa than the rest of Africa, where it is popular because it is cheap to play, Africa has a warm climate conducive to outdoor sports, and because of the British and French colonial presence there in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Africa is a continent hugely diverse in it's sport. Often a countries choice of sport depends on its past and Africa past is littered with acquisitions of it's land by foreign powers. South Africa for instance was colonized as well as other southern countries by the British Empire (Zimbabwe, Malawi) so sports played there include rugby, cricket, tennis and golf. Indeed across all British colonies these sports were imported and played. Across middle and north Africa the sports are mainly different though with France and Bulgaria colonizing a large area. Wrestling is popular in Nigeria for instance where it is a tradition of their tribes. However the main sport played across all of Africa is football (soccer) without a doubt. It's popularity is not matched by any other sport in the least. It is popular probably because of it's ease to understand and the low cost required to play. Most of Africa's populous one must remember is poor and so a sport like this suits them.
South Africa is a country where people have religious freedom, which means you can be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or whatever you choose, including agnostic and atheistic. As South Africa has many indigenous tribes such as Zulus and Sothos and Pedis, they also have their own forms of religion, including praying to ancestors.
Rugby and Cricket
the main sport in south Africa is rugby but they also play a lot of soccer on the streets
One may play the sport of Rugby by being a part of the South Africa National Rugby Union Team, known as the "Springboks" in South Africa. The team was founded sometime in the late 1890's (exact date unknown).
