PHYSICS

Tension is a force applied within or around an object. The most common example is a wire or cable that is being stretched by opposing forces. Surface tension is created in liquids by the cohesion of molecules.

MEDICAL

Nerve or muscular reaction to physical or mental stress. The terms hypotension (low) and hypertension (high) apply to an individual's blood pressure.

DRAMA

In literary terms, it is similar to physiological tension, in that the created elements provide a situation that needs to be addressed or solved. Example of such "pressure" would be actual or potential conflicts between characters, or the need to complete or prevent an impending action. Tension is used to create and maintain the reader or viewer's interest.
