The primary sector, which includes farming, forestry, mining, quarrying, and fishing, accounts for about 5% of the labor force. Canada is an important exporter of wood and paper products. It also exports minerals and fossil fuels. Although it is the second leading country in wheat exports, Canada must import significant amounts of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
Manufacturing, which includes activities involved in transforming Natural Resources into a more useable form, accounts for about 16% of the Canadian labor force. Canada produces automobiles, refines oil, turns trees into paper and pulp, processes meat, brews beer, and manufactures iron and steel as well as other goods. Canada's manufacturing extends beyond traditional industries into high-tech items.
Services, such as retailing, financing, education, transportation, communication, and wholesaling, provide jobs for about 75% of the work force.
