The name "49ers" comes from the name given to the gold prospectors who arrived in Northern California around 1849 during the California Gold Rush. The name was suggested to reflect the voyagers who had rushed the West for gold. It is the only name the team has ever been affiliated with and San Francisco is the only city in which it has resided

The '49' in 49ers relates to the year 1849 and 49ers is a term used for the people that went to California to search for gold in what is called the California Gold Rush. Gold was discovered there in 1848 and by 1849 its discovery had pretty much spread around the world. Thousands and thousands of people from all over the world began coming to California to search for gold.
