The modern International Olympic Committee came into being in 1894. In that same year, the IOC's motto of 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' also came into being. The English equivalent of the three Latin words is the following: Faster, Higher, Stronger. For the victory is as much in the effort as in the outcome.
