Its hard to say really. The Eight men singled out from the Chicago White Sox were actually acquitted (found not guilty) in a court of law. However, their suspected involvement in the scandal was cause enough for Major League Baseball to place a life time ban on the players. Some of the players accused posted great numbers in the 1919 Series making it very difficult to prove that there was anything unsavory happening.
It is a known fact that the 1919 Chicago White Sox were NOT the first team to be involved in such a scandal. Gambling and "Fixing" games is something that existed long before the 1919 World Series. It just so happens that the 1919 Series was exposed and made an example of in an attempt to "clean up" the sport before it became totally corrupted.
