Frick & Frack supposedly originated with two Swiss ice skaters who began a comedy skating show in the US and took the names Frick and Frack for their stages names. As an English phrase, Frick and Frack either means two people are so alike no one can tell them apart due to dress, mannerisms, behaviors, etc., OR akin to calling someone a Bozo or the 3 Stooges. Either way, it is a put down, meant to be sarcastic and critical in a thinly veiled reference to 3 Stooges level comedy..

Example 1:

The Frick and Frack of the neighborhood, Charlie, George, and Jon, were off to race bikes--again--knowing they'd have to rebuild each one because they always crash.

Example 2:

There go Sally and Sarah, the Frick and Frack of our school, with their blonde hair in pony tails, and both wearing pink and yellow as their "signature" colors, so they claim. Frick and Frack even speak the same way and use the same words. "Hello, darlings," is how they greet people, and their goodbye sounds like something from Romeo and Juliet.

Note: Though it isn't obscene language, it still is a form of bullying, so it shouldn't be used to label a person.

Origin of frick and frat?

Frick and Frack were the nick-names of the 1930s comedy ice-skating guys.

What is the origin of Frick and Frack?

Frick and Frack was originally coined as the name for a Swiss ice skating comedy team. Werner Groebli (Frick) and Hans Mauch (Frack) were Swiss students in Basel who developed a style of skating to mock the traditional skaters - square turns rather than curved, sharp moves rather than smooth and gliding, feet pointing opposite directions, wobbly legs, cantilevered backbends that seem to defy gravity. They invented the names to conceal their real identity as "show business" was considered a low class occupation and might be an embarassment to their families. Frick was a small town in Switzerland and Frack was the slang term for a frock or overcoat. They performed in Europe for a few years, but joined Ice Follies in 1939 and remained in the USA on the ice show tour. Frick and Frack became arguably the most famous ice comedians of all time. They never trademarked their name as they wanted the brand to spread their fame worldwide and become a household word - as it in fact, has done.

Is frik a word?

The spelling "frick" is part of the slang phrase "frick and frack" denoting either indistinguishable twin personages or as a derisive expression for a duo (i.e "bozos"). This is derived from a pair of famous Swiss skating performers in the 1930's. (The slang word "fricking" is a euphemism for a form of the F word.)

Who is fric and frac?

Frick and Frack were two Swiss skaters who came to the U.S. in 1937 and joined the original Ice Follies show as comedy ice skaters. "Frick" was Werner Groebli (April 21, 1915 - April 14, 2008), born in Basel. "Frack" was Hansruedi (Hans Rudolf) Mauch, (May 4, 1919 - June 4, 1979), also born in Basel. Frick and Frack were known for skating in Alpine Lederhosen and performing eccentric tricks on ice, including the "cantilever spread-eagle," created by Groebli, and Mauch's "rubber legs," twisting and bending his legs while skating in a spread eagle position. Only a few skaters have successfully performed the duo's routines since. Michael Mauch, the son of Hans, once described the origin of their names: "Frick took his name from a small village in Switzerland; Frack is a Swiss-German word for a frock coat, which my father used to wear in the early days of their skating act. They put the words together as a typical Swiss joke." Frick and Frack found fame with the Follies, a revue promoted by Eddie Shipstad and his brother Roy, which began in 1936 and ran for almost 50 years. They also reached a worldwide audience when they began appearing in films, including the Monogram Pictures production "Lady, Let's Dance" in 1944. Their association lasted so long, and they were at one time so well known, that their names became a household term in many languages. Frick and Frack skated in the Ice Follies for many years until Hans Mauch (Frack) contracted osteomyelitis. He retired in 1953, and died on June 4, 1979 in Long Beach, California at the age of 60. He had been married to Mary M. Echlepp of Minneapolis, one of the original Ice Folliettes. Performing well into his late years, Werner Groebli continued on as "Mr. Frick" until an accident forced him to retire in 1980. Groebli lived in the Palm Springs, California area for over 10 years until the death of his wife, the former Yvonne Baumgartner, in 2002. He was featured on a PBS TV special in 1999. Groebli died on April 14, 2008 in Zurich at the age of 92. David Thomas, one of his skating partners after Mauch retired, announced his death from complications after breaking a leg at a nursing home outside of Zurich.[1] "Frick and Frack" has become an English slang term used in two ways. One is to refer to two people so closely associated as to be indistinguishable; the other way is as a term of derision for any two people, on par with calling one person a "Bozo" or three people "Stooges."[2]
