From 1928 to 1960; straight 32 years, India was the Olympic gold medalist in hockey, having 8 gold medals. In 1960 Pakistan won the gold and India bagged silver medal. Again in 1964 and 1980 India won the gold. Late Major Dhyanchand is still remembered as 'Hockey Wizard' in the hockey-world.

I do not know whether its primary or not , but hockey has been assigned our national games but get very less importance to India . This business making country(India) feels its a waste of money to fund a game like hockey whereas it would be honour to host a game like cricket , where lot of money could be made especially by our corrupt politician . Thoughts need to be changed , first to our country brother then to our bureaucrats then only we could feel proud of our national game "HOCKEY".

It seems that it is because Hockey experienced its greatest level of success in British colonial India, where Calcutta HC was founded as the first professional field hockey club outside of England in 1885. Still some people argue that hockey is not a national game in India, I am not certain about it because I am not from India
