He is a wide receiver. ---- Jerry Rice threw 10 passes during his NFL career, completing 3 for 71 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. The 1 TD was a 41 yard pass to J.J. Stokes in a 49ers 28-27 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on December 24, 1995.
Jerry Lee Rice (born October 13, 1962 in Starkville, Mississippi) is a former football wide receiver in the NFL, widely regarded as the best receiver to ever play the game, and arguably the greatest football player ever. He captured three Super Bowl rings as a wideout for the San Francisco 49ers, and also played briefly for the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. He made the Denver Broncos roster in the summer of 2005, but he hung up his shoes shortly before the season began. He is the holder of 38 NFL records, a record in itself. Rice has scored the most touchdowns in NFL history (207), and holds virtually every significant career record for receivers, including receptions (1,549), yards receiving (22,895), all-purpose yards (23,540), touchdown receptions (197) and consecutive games with at least one catch (274). In most cases, the next most prolific player isn't close; for example, he's 67 receiving touchdowns ahead of second place Cris Carter (who is also retired). Rice is the only one of the top 25 scorers in NFL history who did not kick the football. Rice also gained 645 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, an extremely large amount for a wide receiver.
Jerry rice ran a disappointing 4.7 in the 40 yard dash at the NFL combine but still went on to have one of the most successful careers of any wide receiver.
As of July, 2009 he is in the College Football Hall of Fame but not the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Rice was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. The Pro Football Hall of Fame requires a player to be retired for at least five seasons before being eligible to be elected. Rice's final season in the NFL was 2004. He certainly will be elected in his first season of eligibility which will be 2010. He has been elected to the hall of fame as of Feb. 6th 2009 and will be inducted in 2010.
