Scott Westley was the originator of the program. He was a broadcaster for NFL football in 1982-89, before starting the hit ESPN program in 1992. The idea came to him while sitting in a Quiznos. He thought that it would be a good idea to put a bunch of highlights from football games into a half an hour show. ESPN bought the show as a football highlight show and eventually took on all sports and grew to a full hour. It is now even run live on ESPN
