Lake Lloyd was created when a hole was dug in the infield to use the dirt to build up the banking of the track. Because Florida has such a low elevation and high water table, the hole filled with water.

The Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959.

Bill France Sr. began planning for the Daytona track in 1953, in order to promote the Nascar series. This was due to the fact that a beach road course was being used for the Daytona races.

dirt was used to make banks in daytona there is a high sand content in the dirt. they had to dig deep into the earth to get clay-in order to build the 24 degree banks.
