The main reason is to rest their hands and/or adjust their clutch lever. Since the bikes have a single gear, releasing the clutch means the back wheel starts to turn and if the bike was not leant over on the footpeg (thus raising the back wheel off the floor) the bike would move forward. The clutch is easily adjustable to ensure that the level feels right to each individual rider and is adjusted each time a rider is making a start.
Harley started using a sports engine in their bikes in 1960. It was a small 50cc that was popular for beginning riders who wanted to start out with a smaller bike.
Britain's first Speedway meeting was held in Droylsden, Manchester on 25 June 1927.
