As close as I can determine, J.D. McDuffie drove in 653 races at NASCAR's highest level without ever winning. He was killed in the Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen in 1991. That was his 653rd race. Always underfunded, he was respected and loved by all who knew him. I do not know of any other driver who drove that many races without winning. Michael Waltrip drove in 463 races before he won the 2001 Daytona 500. That number, 463, represents 15 years of races. To be honest, I do not think a sponsor would remain with a driver who could not produce a win. At least not for 463 races, or 653 races. One of the reasons J.D. McDuffie could keep going for as long as he did was the relative low cost of racing in the 1960 thru 1990 era. At today's costs, a true independent like J.D. McDuffie could not compete every week.
J.D. McDuffie ran 653 races for over 27 years, and only posted 106 top 10s, and 1 pole. he never got a win but that's only one i know at the moment.
In 1985 Bill Elliott won 11 races and Darrell Waltrip won the Championship with 3 victories.
#1 - Junior Johnson = 50 Wins
#2 - Mark Martin = 35 Wins
#3 - Fireball Roberts = 33 Wins

Andrea de Cesaris has the unfortunate record of starting the most Grand Prix without a victory with 214 races.
