In 1983, Cale Yarborough was the first driver to run a qualifying lap over 200 mph at Daytona. However, on his second of two qualifying laps, Yarborough crashed and flipped his car in turn four. The car had to be withdrawn, and the lap did not count. Cale returned in 1984 to be the first driver to post a qualifying speed of over 200 at 201.848 at Daytona.
