Jos the Boss suffered only minor burns to his face from the pit lane fire that caused his retirement at the 1994 German Grand Prix. His final F1 race came at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix as a driver for Minardi. He currently races in the Le Mans Series and has won several 1000 km races and also won the LMP2 class (with co drivers Peter van Merksteijn and Jeroen Bleekemolen) at the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 1994 Formula One season is known for the death of arguably the best formula one driver to ever race "Ayrton Senna". The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix was the fateful event. Roland Ratzenberger was injured fatally during the qualifying session and died in the nearby hospital. The next day during the race, Senna suffered a similar accident which resulted in a fractured skull. Senna was airlifted to the nearest hospital within minutes but was pronounced dead later that evening.
