The first major recognized race took place between Paris and Rouen in France in 1894. The first Grands Prix took place in France in the early 1900's and this is what eventually evolved into the modern Formula 1. The sport technically developed throughout Europe and America, but if you we're to chose just one country as the starting point, most would argue France.
