Nascar began their Strictly Stock Series in 1949. During that season, the number 3 was used by a handful of different drivers including Bill Snowden, Johnny Rogers and AlWagoner. There were only 8 races during the 1949 season.

Richard Childress holds the rights from Nascar to the #3. Nascar owns the car numbers and leases them out to the teams each season.
