There are many common injuries Formula One racers sustain: # Heat Exhaustion & Dehydration - The cockpit of a F! auto can easily be 20 degrees F hotter than it is outside and it is not uncommon for a driver to lose over 2lbs. after 2 hours of driving. # Neck Damage - Car acceleration, vibrations and strain when cornering is jarring on the neck. A neck pad is worn but, it is unable to prevent all injuries. The helmet is a protector of the head but puts a great deal of pressure on the neck. Centrifugal forces multiply the weight of a helmet by four times. The neck is also affected by continuous jostling when the car is lifted over bumps. # Thumb & Rib Injuries - Dislocation can occur by the steering wheel if curbs are taken at a high speed. # Coccyx Injuries - Uneven track surfaces cause shock within the cockpit. The Coccyx will repeatedly absorb this shock. # Feet & Heel Injuries - Heavy breaking can cause injury to these areas # Eyes - Constant vibrations cause eye fatigue which in turn can cause attention loss. # Knee & Elbow Injuries- These areas are prone to getting knocked in the cockpit.
