Since the discovery of steel, bicycles in the US are rarely constructed out of iron. It is possible to find antique iron bicycles for sale although they are not common. The number of riders of iron bicycles in the US is likely to be negligible. In India and China it is still possible to find bicycles in production that are made out of wrought iron but they are not the majority as the price of more modern materials has dropped greatly in the last thirty years.

Most modern bicycles in the developed world are made out of Aluminium, with a significant proportion still using different grades of Steel, differing qualities of Carbon Fibre and a small proportion using less prevalent materials such as Titanium, Scandium, wood or even bamboo.

It is estimated that 87 million people in the United States ride bicycles, which would be roughly 27 percent of the population. The word bicycle was introduced in the 1860s.
