He started racing quarter midgets as a little kid in Connecticut, where he originally lived. Then he moved with his family to Georgia so that his sister could pursue her dream of ice skating. From there, he was able to get noticed, especially by Mark Martin, who dubbed him the "real deal" at age 15. Joe Gibbs signed a contract with him after Richard Childress let him go.
