Generally mx groups under the age of 16 are designated by groupings of age and also ability. The age you are also designates the bikes you are allowed to race. Most of the rulings on age sections is set out by whatever governing body the track you intend to race at comes under. Some tracks that are not under a governing body can sometimes deviate from rulings but most still follow the same as those tracks affliated. The best way to discover your own age grouping and what bikes would suit you is to contact the track you intend to race at and ask them. Or you could Google for the governing body of motorsport in your own country. Each country does have different rulings so it is not a worldwide thing. Some countries require the rider to attend several hours of coaching before being allowed to get a licence to race and can only race with a licence. So best thing to do is check with your own countries governing body
Over 16's usually are placed by ability and again depending upon what country you are in, in some cases to turn pro you need to rack up points winning major events. ALso in some places endorsed licenses are required to let the rider attempt supercross or fmx
