It's mainly to reduce fuel consumption. A streamlined shape needs less energy to push it forward against standard air pressure - than one that isn't streamlined.
Nowadays the F1 engines are 2.4L V8.

A cheetah is around 250 kmh slower than a Formula One car. The cheetah would only win if the Formula One car was travelling slowly.

They are hi-tech machines that are made up top of the notch electronic equipment, with ultra-powerful engines and other best of the technology automobile components. Because of all these reasons the F1 car is extremely competitive.
