The Indianapolis 500-Mile Race, by far. According to Wikipedia, crowds at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May can reach "up to 165,000" when the 52,000-capacity grandstand is combined with the luxury boxes and infield standing-room-only crowds. No one knows exactly how many seats are in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway grandstand, but they know it's well over 250,000 and today they'll all be full. That doesn't count the infield, which is larger at Indy (a 2-1/2 mile track) than at Churchill Downs (a 1-1/8 mile track). It's conceivable that 300,000 people will attend the Indianapolis 500. I also think a lot more people will watch it on television--Indy's a couple hours from flag to flag, while the Derby is two whole minutes long.

Take Charge Indy because he injured himself during the race.
Yes, but his name was spelled Atswhatimtalknbout. He ran in the 2003 Kentucky Derby, and finished fourth after a troubled trip. He was a beautiful, talented, and well-bred son of A.P. Indy, and unfortunately was euthanized the following year after an internal rupture.
They weren't disqualified.Take Charge Indy: was in a contending positionfor the title, however, three-quarters of a mile into the Kentucky Derby, his jockey realized that the horse had reacted to something and slowed him down to make sure he didn't do more damage. After x-rays, it was announced that Take Charge Indy had a bone chip fracture in his left, front pastern. He will undergo surgery and will be able to race again in the near future.Daddy Long Legs: Daddy Long Legs broke poorly out of the gate and was not used to the dirt surface and thus, was unable to perform on it. His jockey saw him start to fade and eased up on him instead of pushing him out of his limits.
Kentucky has a long history of producing some of the fastest race horses throughout the world, and, due to its famous thoroughbred Breeding programs, has produced many other attractions to keep people coming back to bet on their favored horses In addition, the KY Derby is special to the world of American sports in general, as it is the longest continually held sporting event in the U.S. and one of the longest in the world. The Super Bowl, the World Series, the Masters, the Indy 500--none of these have been held for 138 consecutive years as has the Derby (first running was in 1875).

The attendance was close for several years, but in recent years the Indy 500 has begun to pull away from the Allstate 400 in attendance figures. The Indy 500 continues to be close to a sellout crowd each year, while the Allstate 400 has begun to show sizeable gaps. There will never be fully accurate numbers though, as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway refuses to publize their attendance numbers.
