Alan was never married and at the time of his death did not have a girlfriend.

Alan was known to maintain relationships with lots of girls. It was noted that his father remarked at Alan's funeral, "do you think we should gather up the girls here, claiming to be his one and only, for a group photo." Alan kept a list of the attributes he desired in a lady on a piece of paper folded in his wallet. This included about 25 characteristics and listed everything from personal grooming to personality traits. He had a young lady who he admired more than most, but had left behind in Wisconsin upon moving south in 1986.
