Usually, the 10th digit is the year code.
If it has a 17 digit VIN, the tenth digit from the left is the year of manufacture.

A Yamaha Dealer told me that if the 10th digit is a number then the year is that number. For example, if the number is 4 then the Bear is a 2004. I did not ask about older models, just the 2000 and newer models.
The tenth digit in the 17 digit vin number will tell you what year it is.
There should be an S in the VIN. I believe it should be the sixth digit.
