1) Warm the bike up to operating temp, shut it off and get the bike level.
2) Remove the drain plug.
3) Clean the drain plug, it will have a magnetic tip to catch any metal shavings.
4) Once all oil has drained out, clean the surface of engine around the drain plug hole and insert the drain plug and tighten to 14 ft-lbs.
5) You have 2 oil screens, a short one on the bottom and a long one on the side of the engine. Pull these and clean them, dry with air and check the rubber o-rings before reinstalling .
6) Next place a rag under the oil filter housings and remove all 4 bolts. (I believe the 400 has 2 filters - if it just has 1 filter there will just be 2 bolts to loosen)
7) Pull the oil filters, wipe down the filter housing including the o-ring sealing surface. Check the o-rings for damage and replace if damaged.
8) The manual calls for you to lay the bike on its side and fill the oil filter housings up half full with oil, insert the oil filters, grease the o-rings and replace the o-rings and filter covers tightening to 4 ft-lbs.
9) Sit the motorcycle back up on a stand where it is level and pull the fill plug on the right side of the engine. Add 1.2 Liter (40.5 oz) of Motorex Power Synt 4T 10W50. (You can use other JASO certified motorcycle full synthetics but I have had very good results with it in my 525 XC-W. It shifts smoother so I will pay the little bit extra per bottle) Put the filler plug back in and start and check for leaks.

*8A) I do step 8 differently, just gave you the KTM version above. I replace the oil filters dry and grease the o-rings and replace oil filter covers. Add the oil and replace the oil fill cap. Next I will hold the kill switch and hit the e-start for about 15-20 seconds. This will fill the oil filter housings up and not allow the bike to run without proper oil in the oil circuit. If you do this step, make sure you are holding the kill switch while you are bumping the e-start.
