The Battle of Shiloh, fought on April 6-7, 1862, resulted in significant casualties for both the Union and Confederate forces. On the first day, April 6, Union forces suffered approximately 1,754 killed, 8,408 wounded, and 2,885 captured or missing, while Confederate casualties were around 1,728 killed, 8,012 wounded, and 959 missing. The second day, April 7, saw the Union suffering an additional 1,406 casualties and the Confederates about 2,000 more. Overall, the battle led to around 23,746 total casualties, making it one of the bloodiest battles in the early Civil War.
The Confederates overran Union forces on Henry House Hill during the First Battle of Bull Run by launching a coordinated assault that capitalized on the Union's disorganization and lack of reinforcements. As Confederate troops, led by General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, held strong positions, Union forces, initially confident, began to falter under pressure. The Confederate's aggressive tactics and flanking maneuvers overwhelmed the Union lines, ultimately leading to a chaotic retreat of Union soldiers. This decisive Confederate victory boosted Southern morale and marked a significant early battle in the Civil War.

James Long was an American filibuster and military leader known for his attempts to promote Texan independence from Mexico in the early 19th century. He led an expedition in 1819 to establish a republic in Texas, which was then part of Mexico, but his efforts ultimately failed. Long was captured and executed by Mexican forces in 1822, but his actions contributed to the growing tensions that eventually led to the Texas Revolution. His legacy is often associated with the early movements for Texan independence.

Kentucky never left the Union so there was no need for readmission. Kentucky declared for the Union after Confederate forces occupied Columbus in late 1861. Tennessee left the Union and was readmitted into the Union early on during Reconstruction.
