Would depend on the country, but, I assume you mean UK as you said 'copper' which is colloquial for Police Officer. Firstly, you must familiarize yourself with the application form. This is the first thing that they will see you about you. Spelling and grammar must be perfect. If it says use black pen, use black pen only. Once you have done that, you will then be invited to a fitness test and a mental test consisting of basic test which will test the level of your fitness and your mental capabilities. You will also have to pass a medical form a doctor they choose. Before you go for these tests, whilst in the process of filling out the application form (as it should take you a week or two to fill it out), you should start to go to the gym (if needed) and work on overall fitness levels. Also try puzzle games, crosswords, word searches etc to get your brain used to being challenged.

Once these have passed, you will be asked to an interview. If you pass this, you will start your training, then you will be on probation for two years. No formal qualifications are needed, but things like GCSE's in English and Maths will work in your favour, as will a college course in Public Services.
