Mine That Bird, the 50-to-1 long-shot winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby, is a gelding.

Mine That Bird was sired by Birdstone, the winner of the 2004 Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in thoroughbred horseracing's triple crown, out of the dam Mining My Own. Although the colt has an acceptable pedigree, he wasn't considered stud material as a yearling because of his small size and crooked legs. He currently stands somewhere between 15.1 and 15.3 hands (there is currently no definitive source of information) as a three-year-old.

He was purchased at the 2007 Fall Fasig-Tipton yearling sale for a mere $9,500. The gelding was later sold privately to his current owners for $400,000.
