Bodies of water - frozen water - are used for snowmobiling all the time. Snowmobiling across water becomes a legal issue when the body of water is on private property. Entering private property without the owner's permission is "trespassing" and laws are in place that can make it a criminal or a civil offense. While there are some specific exceptions to the laws, if No Trespassing signs are posted around an area to wish to access, honor the sign's warning and do not enter the property. Most public bodies of water are there for public use. Unless a posting specifically prohibits the use of snowmobiles, you have free access.
