When I was that age I shoveled snow in the winter and mowed lawns in the summer.
My dad bought a child-safe mulching lawnmower blade and a walkman. I listened to music and foreign language lessons while I went from house to house. Everyone said yes to the cute little kid with the wagon and mower. It was good exercise so I lost weight and felt good making money, which I spent on stuff like a cool bike.
When I bought a small Toro snowblower, that's when I made real money. If you have snow, just go door to door with a plastic shovel in your hand and ask people. Leave the blower out of sight. Tell them $6 for the front or $11 for the whole driveway. With the Toro you can finish in a half hour or less. Do a good job and then do a little edgework and steps with the shovel and a broom. You can make $100 a day and that's not bad for a 12 year old.
At first I blew my money and that was fun, but then I started saving up and when I was 16 I bought a Volvo I wanted.
It teaches you about the value of time and hard work.
It also teaches you that running your own business is SO much better than working for some other jerk. Also you won't be fat like most teenagers these days. It will make you strong without being boring.
You may even meet new friends, make connections, or find a new girlfriend. I often recommend this strategy to my friends sons and one of them started his own landscaping company and hired people, now he sits at home and counts his money.
