Yes. I started working at a Butcher shop a few months ago. It's not as bad as you might think and I don't think it's illegal or anything. It may depend on your exact age though and where you live. I grind hamburger, make sausage, beef jerky, cure and slice bacon and recently started running the till - stuff like that. You get to know the other workers and work can be pretty fun there so I'd say put your name in and give it a try. There is some lifting involved though but it makes you stong pretty quick. I think it depends on your state. I've heard that teens can't get jobs that involve knives or anything like that. A friend of mine works at Target, but because she is 16, she isn't allowed to open boxes with knives or anything like that.
I would ask just in case, because many family butchers do hire teens.
in a family business
It depends on what you mean by working with his dad. In most places, you have to be at least 14 to obtain a work permit. But it if the business is a family business, yes, a 13 year old can work with their parents, as long as it does not involve hazardous situations.
McDonald`s does not hire any 13 year olds. A 13 year old cannot get a work permit to work at a fast food store.
Unless the business he is working for is his family owned business, very likely not. At 13, most states will not even issue work permits to someone that young, much less to work in a hazardous occupation.

I read online that you have to be 12, 13, or 14, but wait until your parents can tell you.
