There are three internationally accepted variations of cricket that define the length of game play.

1) Test Match

Test matches run for five consecutive days. Each day consist of 90 overs of game play. The number of overs per day may be reduced if bad light or weather interrupts the game play. The lost overs might be compensated over next day. A maximum of two innings per team has to be completed -- the innings interleave between the two teams. The 90 overs usually have to be completed within 8-9 hours that include lunch, drinks and tea breaks.

2) One Day

One days complete in one day. The game consists of two 50 over innings. The time allocated to complete one 50 over inning is usually 3.5 hours. Teams might be penalized if the exceed the time limit while Bowling. The whole game takes approximately 8 hours (two innings + lunch and drinks break).

3) 20-20

A twenty-twenty game consists of two innings, each consisting of twenty overs. An inning usually has to be completed in 1.5 hours. Teams might be penalized if they exceed this limit while bowling. The duration of break between two innings usually baries between 10 and 30 minutes and the game therefore finishes in approximately 3.5 hours.
