On 7 March 2003, FIFA announced their intentions to have the 2014 FIFA World Cup hosted in South America. Subsequently, the South American Football Association (CONMEBOL) announced on 3 June 2003 that Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia wanted to host the event.

By March 2004, CONMEBOL had already unanimously agreed to back Brazil as their only candidate to host the World Cup. In December 2006, Brazil formally announced their candidancy, as did Colombia who continued to promote their own candidancy despite CONMEBOL's decision. Argentina did not announce any candidancy.

On 11 April 2007, Colombia withdrew their bid making Brazil the only eligible candidate.

F.i.F.A chose Brazil for the 2014 host, as they came forward to host the world cup after the World War 2, both Europe and the U.s.A said they would not invest their money, in a world cup. So it is 64 years a long time. It is their turn now.

Despite the international recognition and enormous revenue Brazil generated from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, it was all overshadowed by the immense cost in staging the tournament which totaled upwards of USD $14 billion. This made the 2014 FIFA World Cup the most expensive staging of the tournament in history.

Originally budgeted at $1.1 billion, the costs for the World Cup reached its controversial level due to decisions to build five completely new stadiums, revamp transportation systems, and invest in additional security.

The huge cost put enormous stress on Brazil's citizens, with extraordinary tax increases and government borrowing. In fact, much of the protesting that occurred in 2013 was actually aimed at Brazil being the hosts, which protesters claimed caused Brazil's spiraling economic descent.

In 2007, Brazil's economy was one of the fastest-growing in the world, which increased government officials' confidence that they had the economic power to stage the World Cup again, 50 years after they last hosted it in 1950. When costs suddenly rose to new heights, Brazil's economy was placed under enormous strain.
