Immediately after the October Revolution, or the November Revolution depending on which calender is used the Empire of Russia was renamed the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. Later, in 1922, it joined with Ukraine, Belorussia and the Transcaucasus Federation to form the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the USSR or Soviet Union.

"Russia" was never simply renamed the Soviet Union.
