Both a helium balloon and a Golf ball take up space that air would otherwise occupy if they were not there.

The weight of a helium balloon is much less than the weight of the air that would otherwise fill its space, so the surrounding air holds it up. This is called buoyancy and is also the reason that a boat made of steel will float on water.

On the other hand, the weight of a golf ball is much more than the weight of the air that would otherwise fill its space, so the surrounding air is unable to hold it up and it stays on the ground. In other words it is too heavy to float in the air.

Does a golf ball have a lower mass than a balloon?

Yes, a golf ball typically has a lower mass than a balloon. A golf ball is made of dense materials like rubber and hard plastic, while a balloon is filled with air or helium, which is lighter. The mass of an object is determined by the amount of matter it contains, so the solid material of a golf ball will generally have a higher mass than the gas inside a balloon.

What has more matter a ping pong ball or a golf ball?

It depends what you mean by a big balloon, otherwise I would definitely go for a golf ball.

Why won't a golf ball float on top of water?

The golf ball's density is greater than the water, which the water has adensity of 1.

Can a golf ball float in Pepsi or Diet Pepsi?

How would you find the volume of a golf ball?

Put an exact amount of water in a measuring cup. Drop in a golf ball. The increase in water level equals the volume of the golf ball, assuming the ball doesn't float. For example, 200mL before ball. 280ml after ball dropped in. Therefore volume equals 40ml or 40 Cubic Centimeters.

How does density relate to a object sinking or floating?

An object will sink if its density is greater than the density of the fluid it is placed in. Conversely, an object will float if its density is less than the density of the fluid. This is due to the buoyant force exerted on the object by the fluid, which opposes the force of gravity pulling the object down.

Why would a golf ball float on water and not a penny?

Only special bought golf balls float, and they are designed with air inside. That air obviously is lighter than water and will always rise, a penny however has no air and is stream lined to slide through the water. :D
