There was a man who had to keep his students physically active and so invented a sport, consisting of five players on a team. It was played with a ball and hoop to score points. This is where Basketball originated from.
The sport traveled and soon became popular over time. Woman actually did not prefer the rules (not wanting to run with the ball) that were set and so took the sport to create their own wanted version.

Americans went to England and played basketball, but because the English women were only wearing dresses and skirts, it was hard for then to run around so they made up a whole new game where they ran around much less.
Netball was created as a version of basketball for women. In 1892 Senda Berenson changed the rules of basketball to create netball. Netball became it's own sport in 1899 with specially designed nets.

because it was popular and there was a vote saying that it should be!
