The Battle of Marathon was an exceptional achievement for the Greeks over the numerically superior Persians. Pheidippides was sent to inform Athens of this signal victory. This required crossing a distance of approximately 25 miles - the approximate distance from Marathon to Athens. He ran without stopping, gasped out his news Victory! (Nike! in Greek) and died of exhaustion.
To celebrate this victory and the feat of Pheidippides the Marathon race was run annually and is now synonymous with a great achievement .
The modern Marathon Race eventually became fixed at 26 miles 385 yards in length .
Because Athens sent one messenger to run 26miles (40 kilometers) to announce Athens victory and died of exhaustion. legend also has it that Pheidippides (also spelled Phidippides, or Philippides), was sent from Athens to Sparta before the battle in order to request assistance from the Spartans; he is said to have covered about 150 miles (240 km) in about two days.
