After his recent French Open win, Roger Federer has to be considered the favorite going into Wimbledon 2009. Depending on his health, defending champion Rafael Nadal would be considered a close second-favourite. Andy Murray would be another player worthy of such consideration. On the women's side, both Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) should be considered favourites, based on their previous championships. If she can regain her pre-injury form, Maria Sharapova would also be considered a threat for the title.

Rafael Nadal was the No.1 seed for the tournament, but withdrew due to knee trouble, so No.2 seed Roger Federer effectively became top seed in his place.
