Robert "Bob" Pullard was the first Black Pole Vaulter to clear 18'00." Ironically the first three Black Pole Vaulters to clear 18'00" all competed for the University of Southern California (USC) a university with a long and storied history in the pole vault with 5 Olympic Medalists in the event. Pullard worked as an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department, until his death in the late 80's.
