Before Gary Adams started Taylormade, I was a Golf professional club repairman in Oceanside, Ca. which is next to Carlsbad where Taylormade started. A guy brought me a metalwood driver to try out. The head was black and I put my own shaft in it. He claimed I would hit it farther. I didn’t think I did so I gave it back to him. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the guys name or the name on the club. I think he sold his design. It wasn’t til later that Taylormade’s started showing up. Long before that, though driving ranges had metal rental woods to withstand the abuse they took.
